#PlasticFreeDeal is a local, non-political group working with businesses, community groups, individuals and local councils to reduce the use of single use plastic in the town.
It’s part of the UK wide #PlasticFree Coastline initiative co-ordinated by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and is backed locally by Deal With It – Transition Deal.
Convenient at the time, throwaway plastics are used for a matter of minutes, but last a lifetime in the marine environment, causing death and destruction to all that resides there. With parts of the ocean now holding more plastic than plankton, our entire ecosystem is under threat. Losing food, recreation and the oxygen giving qualities of the ocean will impact every single one of us.
Plastic is a growing disaster!
Most plastics are made from petroleum or natural gas, both non-renewable resources extracted and processed using energy-intensive techniques that destroy fragile ecosystems.
Its manufacture, as well as its destruction by incineration, pollutes air, land and water, releasing toxic chemicals, including carcinogens.
Plastics are regularly eaten by marine and land animals, with fatal consequences!
Much plastic pollution is not even visible to the naked eye! Research shows that microscopic plastic particles are present in the air, in our soils and rivers and in the sea. Plastic is everywhere!
Plastic packaging is a huge source of waste!
Synthetic plastic does not biodegrade! It just sits and accumulates in landfills or pollutes the environment. We see it everywhere – on our streets and roadsides, in our hedgerows, fields and on our beaches.
Plastic has become a waste management nightmare!
